Fox at the time had recently pulled it out of its schedule for replay rotation throughout the week, and had also reduced the order of episodes for that season from 23 to a much lower 14.

This was their way of lashing out at one of Fox’s more popular shows at the time (The OC)

Additionally, in Season 3 Episode 8, which was the very episode before this scene happened: there was a part where Gob built an additional banana stand in front of the original Bluth family stand, in order to compete with Michael’s business. He tells Michael that he “did the research” and that “more frozen bananas are sold right here on this boardwalk than anywhere in The OC”….
Michael has the exact same response: “Don’t call it that.”
